5 Tips for Transforming Your Builder-Grade Home with Custom Features

Builder-grade homes are wonderful because they represent that midpoint between economical and enduring. While many builder grades can be beautiful, they can easily fall under the "cookie-cutter" look due to them being the least customized home option.

Let's unpack some of the ways in which we can transform your builder-grade home into one that is seemingly more intentional and custom.

Tip #1: Add Elegant New Light Fixtures

An easy and less expensive way to add a bit of embellishment is to upgrade all of your light fixtures. By swapping out those basic flush mounts for custom selections, or adding light sources such as chandeliers, pendants, or sconces, you'll create some positive drama that reflects your personal style.

Tip #2: Bring in Texture with Wall or Ceiling Details

Texture is a sure-fire way to add character to any space. You can easily add texture to your ceilings or walls by adding beadwork or paneling, coffered or tray ceilings, board and batten, crown molding, shiplap, wainscoting, wood beams, paint, wallpaper, etc. Any of these choices will make your home look and feel elevated and more one-of-a-kind.

Tip #3: Sophisticate Your Space with Custom Window Treatments

Consider investing in custom window treatments such as shutters, blinds, or drapery. Any of these options will add sophisticated personality to the space while optimizing natural light and augmenting beauty.

Tip #4: Enhance Curb Appeal with Elevated Details

Replacing your builder-grade garage door makes for an impactful new addition to your home, particularly if it occupies space in the front elevation. Other simple ways to boost curb appeal include swapping out your front door design or color, exterior lighting, redoing the driveway, greenery and landscaping, etc.

Tip #5: Beautify Your Backyard

Beautifying your backyard with a makeover is a wonderful way to create a unique and private outdoor living area. This can be achieved by replacing a small deck or patio with a custom landscape design or by adding a multi-story deck, stamped concrete patio, raising beds for shrubs or flowers, water features, string lights, a cozy fire pit, etc.

With so many wonderful ways to layer elements and infuse them with personal touches, it really isn't difficult to transform your builder-grade home into one that feels more tailored and exclusively yours. Whether it's trading windows for sets of glass doors or selecting and installing new countertops for your kitchen, I am always here and ready to help brainstorm and/or implement your next home project.
